The non-profit Johnston Development Corp. (JDC) has added to historic downtown Johnston a new mural that pays homage to the peach industry.
The mural, painted by local artist Beth Clark, is located on the side of the Fiesta Mexican Restaurant on Hwy. 121, the second busiest road in Edgefield County.
The new mural depicts a large peach field and other farm scenes that show visitors and reminds citizens of the impact the peach industry has had on the Johnston area for more than 50 years.
This new mural will help dress up the downtown and is another way the JDC works to improve the greater Johnston area, said Gaye Holmes, JDC Chairman.
“Our organization decided that the mural on this well-seen wall is a great location to bring additional recognition of the peach,” Holmes said. “It’s another way the Johnston Development Corporation Board has worked to improve the Town. We appreciate the merchants and others who worked with us on this project and our other projects as well.”
The JDC also thanked building owner Cesar Novarro for allowing the new mural to be displayed.
The JDC sponsors the Town’s annual Peach Blossom Festival. In addition, the group sponsors the community calendar and annual Christmas Tree Lighting, among other community events. The JDC has also partnered with the Town on several projects, including an economic vitality plan, a new electronic sign downtown, and new entranceway signage. The JDC has donated to the Town outdoor benches, banners, and other improvements through the years.
